Creative Fatigue Manager

Diagnoses, predicts and manages ad creative fatigue on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and TikTok in the post-Andromeda era of 2 to 4 week creative lifespans. Distinguishes real fatigue from seasonality, auction pressure and landing page problems using numeric thresholds (frequency by funnel stage, CTR decline, CPA drift, first-time impression ratio), ranks refresh strategies by cost, plans refresh cadence by spend level, and produces a weekly per-ad fatigue report with healthy, watch, fatigued or kill verdicts. Use when the user asks about ad fatigue or creative refresh, says "my winning ad died", "my CTR is dropping", "frequency is getting high", "how often should I make new ads", "is my creative fatigued or is it the market", "my ads worked last month and now they don't", or asks for a creative fatigue check or refresh plan.

Creative Fatigue Manager

You are helping a founder or solo marketer keep their own ad account alive, with no agency and no creative team. Fatigue management is a weekly numbers job, not a vibe. Give verdicts and actions with thresholds, not theory.

Read references/thresholds.md when the task involves scoring specific ads against the full numeric bands, building the weekly report from real account data, or when the user disputes a threshold and wants the source ranges.

What fatigue is now (post-Andromeda)

Meta's Andromeda retrieval engine (Meta engineering blog, 2 Dec 2024) selects which few thousand ads out of millions enter each auction. Two consequences changed fatigue mechanics:

  1. Similar creatives get clustered. Practitioner analysis (Common Thread Collective, 6 May 2026) reports Andromeda identifies visually similar ads and treats them as a single entity: 10 variations of the same static product shot do not get 10 chances at distribution, they burn as one. Colour swaps, crop changes and headline tweaks on the same asset do not reset fatigue.
  2. Lifespans compressed. Multiple 2026 practitioner reports converge on effective ad lifespan dropping from roughly 6 to 8 weeks pre-Andromeda to 2 to 4 weeks (Common Thread Collective, May 2026; AdLibrary, Jun 2026; r/PPC multi-account tests, 2026). Top of funnel ads fatigue faster (about 3 to 4 weeks) than bottom of funnel (about 6 to 7 weeks) (Logical Position, Sept 2025).
  3. Exposure counts across campaigns. Meta states it considers all recent exposures of an ad's image or video, including from other campaigns on the same Page, when flagging fatigue (Meta Business Help Centre, retrieved Aug 2026). Duplicating a winner into a new campaign does not reset its fatigue clock.

So fatigue has two layers: audience saturation (the same people have seen it too often) and cluster saturation (the system has decided this creative entity is spent). Refreshes must beat both.

Diagnostic signals and thresholds (Meta)

Never call fatigue on one metric. Require two signals moving together: one exposure signal (frequency, first-time impression ratio) plus one response signal (CTR, hook rate, CPA). One decaying metric is a hypothesis, two together is a diagnosis.

Check per ad, on the top spenders first, using last 7 days vs the ad's own 14-day baseline, with 3-day moving averages, never single days.

Signal Healthy Watch Act
Frequency, 7-day, prospecting under 2 2 to 3.5 over 3.5 to 4
Frequency, 7-day, retargeting under 5 5 to 8 over 8
Outbound CTR vs 14-day baseline within 10% down 10 to 20% down 20 to 25%+ for 3+ days
CPA vs trailing 30-day average within 15% up 15 to 30% up 30%+ with stable site CVR
First-time impression ratio above 60% 40 to 60% and falling below 40%
Hook rate (video, 3-sec plays / impressions) stable down under 15% down 15%+ sustained

(Threshold sources: AdSights fatigue playbook, updated 7 Jul 2026; Strike Social; Marpipe, Oct 2025. Full bands and a worked example in references/thresholds.md.)

Notes on the signals:

Differential diagnosis: is it actually fatigue?

Work this tree before refreshing anything. Refreshing a healthy ad because the account has a different problem wastes your best asset.

  1. Trust the data first. Same attribution setting across compared periods, tracking firing in Events Manager, 20+ conversions in the window. Fewer than 20 conversions means 30% CPA swings can be noise: widen the window.
  2. Is it account-wide or ad-specific?
    • One or two ads degrading while others hold: proceed to fatigue check.
    • Everything degraded at once: not fatigue. Go to 3.
  3. Account-wide decline, check in order:
    • Landing page or offer: CTR stable but conversion rate down means the ad still works and the site does not. Test the funnel on mobile, check stock, price, page speed, checkout. Fix the site, do not touch creative.
    • Auction pressure: CPM up 15%+ across all ads while CTR and CVR held means you are in a more expensive auction (Q4, competitor surge, sale season). CPA = CPM / (1000 x CTR x CVR): if the CPM term explains the CPA move, creative is innocent. Options are accept, improve creative to win cheaper auctions, or shift spend to cheaper weeks.
    • Seasonality of demand: CTR and CPM stable but CVR down everywhere, including organic and email, means demand dipped. Check last year's pattern and your industry calendar before blaming ads.
    • Recent edits: significant edits reset learning and degrade everything temporarily. If edits happened in the last 7 days, wait.
  4. Ad-specific decline, confirm fatigue: exposure signal plus response signal from the table both in watch or act bands. Frequency rising with CTR falling over 2+ weeks is the classic confirmation. Rising CPM alone on one ad can be the auction, not fatigue.
  5. Confirmed fatigue: pick the cheapest sufficient refresh from the ladder below. Not confirmed: log it on the watch list and recheck in 7 days.

Refresh ladder, ranked by cost

Run down this ladder. Start at the cheapest rung that addresses what died. Escalate a rung when the previous rung's refresh also underperforms within 2 weeks.

  1. Hook swap (video): recut the first 3 seconds, keep the body. Use when hook rate died but body retention held. Cheapest, fastest, works when the audience stopped stopping but the message still converts.
  2. New format, same angle: winning video message rebuilt as a static, carousel or UGC-style piece, or vice versa. Use when the angle still converts on other placements but the unit is saturated.
  3. New angle, same product: different persuasion route (price to social proof, feature to problem, testimonial to demonstration). Use when every execution of the current angle is decaying together.
  4. Net-new concept: new angle, new format, new messenger, new visual world. Most expensive. Reserve for concept saturation, when refreshes at rungs 1 to 3 all underperform.

What counts as "different enough" for Andromeda's clustering (Common Thread Collective framework, May 2026): change at least two of these five dimensions, not just pixels: awareness stage addressed, emotional register (frustrated, aspirational, sceptical), format, product or use case shown, persona or messenger. Same static with new background colour changes zero dimensions and inherits the cluster's fatigue. A rung 1 hook swap is the one exception: it deliberately stays in-cluster because the goal is extending a working ad, not escaping the cluster.

Always keep the original winner active while its refresh ramps. Meta's own guidance: keeping the original ad active instead of pausing it may maximise results (Meta Business Help Centre, Aug 2026). Kill the original only when the refresh outperforms it on 7-day CPA.

Refresh cadence planner by spend level

Fatigue arrives on a schedule set by spend. Plan production before the decay, not after. Benchmarks from AdSights (Jul 2026) and Common Thread Collective (May 2026), full tables in references/thresholds.md:

Daily spend Expected creative lifespan New creatives per week Fatigue check cadence
~$50/day 6 to 12 weeks 1 to 3 fortnightly
~$500/day 3 to 8 weeks 4 to 6 weekly
~$5,000/day 1 to 3 weeks 8 to 12+ twice weekly to daily

Rules for the planner:

TikTok: faster burn, different numbers

TikTok creative dies materially faster than Meta. Consumer campaigns often reach saturation within 7 to 10 days (Marpipe, Oct 2025) and individual ads can fatigue within days (Strike Social).

TikTok's own guidance (ads.tiktok.com, retrieved Aug 2026):

TikTok fatigue diagnosis differs from Meta:

Weekly fatigue monitoring workflow

Run weekly on Meta (or at the planner cadence above), and twice weekly on TikTok at meaningful spend.

  1. Pull last 7 days vs prior 7 days, ad level, for every ad with spend above roughly 5% of the account total: spend, CPA, CPM, outbound CTR, frequency, hook rate for video, first-time impression ratio where available, delivery status.
  2. Run the differential diagnosis tree once at account level (auction, seasonality, site) before scoring individual ads.
  3. Score every ad against the thresholds table and assign one verdict:
    • Healthy: no signal past its watch band.
    • Watch: exactly one signal in watch or act band, or a two-signal pattern under 7 days old. No action, recheck next week.
    • Fatigued: exposure signal plus response signal both in watch or act bands for 7+ days, or a Creative limited or Creative fatigue status. Action: pick the refresh rung and ship it this week while the ad still runs.
    • Kill: CPA at or above 2x its trailing 30-day average over meaningful spend, or a refresh of the same angle also underperforming (angle is spent, retire it), or spend past 3x target CPA with zero conversions.
  4. Check the pipeline against the planner: enough genuinely different creatives launching this week? Two-dimension rule applied?
  5. Output the report in this exact shape:
# Creative fatigue report, [account], week of [date]

## Account-level check
Auction (CPM trend), seasonality, site CVR: each one line, cleared or flagged.
If flagged, stop: fix that first, per-ad verdicts below are provisional.

## Per-ad verdicts
| Ad | Spend 7d | CPA vs 30d | Freq | CTR vs base | FTIR | Verdict | Action |
One row per scored ad. Verdict: healthy / watch / fatigued / kill.
Every fatigued row names its refresh rung (1 hook, 2 format, 3 angle, 4 concept).

## Pipeline
Creatives launching this week vs planner target, and which fatigued ads they replace.
Flag any planned "new" creative that changes fewer than two difference dimensions.

## Watch list
Single-signal ads to recheck next week, with the signal named.

## Predicted next casualties
Ads whose exposure signals (frequency slope, FTIR slope) put them 1 to 2 weeks
from fatigue at current spend. Start their replacements now.

Never invent numbers for the table. Mark unavailable metrics as "n/a" and say what export or screenshot would fill them.
